Roth Influence…

By March 14, 2020 No Comments

We recently celebrated the birthday of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. I think most of us can agree that he was one of the forefathers of kustom kulture, and that he left an impact on the car scene that will last longer than we can even imagine. I can still remember the first time I saw his work, and how it shaped my future. At age nine, while visiting with my grandparents, we often would go to yard sales. At one particular sale, the people had a few model cars, a model car magazine, and an old Roth t-shirt catalog. The catalog, full of small pictures of crazy monsters driving wild cartoon cars, some featuring hilarious wordings, was a whole new world for a boy who loved all of those things, but had never seen them combined in such a way. I would sit for hours, redrawing those images, and adding my own little details. The art really spoke to me then, as it does now. Somewhere along the way I lost that catalog, but as a teenager was reintroduced to Ed Roth, Von Dutch, Von Franco, Robert Williams and others via my dad., and I am very thankful for that.   -Messenger
